The Big Blue World

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

This planet we live on is blue. More than 70% of the surface of the earth is comprised of oceans yet we know more about space than the sea. What do we really know about it?

We know that the majority of species are aquatic. We know we could not survive without our oceans. We know a quarter of marine life live among coral reefs and abyssal creatures glow in the dark. We know the biggest animal in the world is the blue whale. Finally, we know we are exploiting, killing and ignoring the wondrous blue world.

We can, and must change. Sea levels are rising, waters are warming and creatures are dying. However, for people to really care about our oceans, they must understand them.

The big blue world is our energy, our resources, our economy, our joy. It is not ours to destroy and exploit. Therefore, tourism businesses must learn to give back to our bays. The energy industry must learn to harness H20. The consumer markets must learn to be environmental. Society must learn that without blue, there is no green. We. Must. Learn.

Future children should not have to learn about coral reefs and sea creatures as a thing of the past. They should learn about how we changed our ways for a better tomorrow - for them.

The big blue world is a wondrous thing. We must never forget it.
